We didn't have any photo editing software, so in order to create animations for the HMI they said we use MS Paint. So it was a shock to me at first but I got used to it pretty quickly, that is until they told me how they made their animations. Fancy graphics and colorful screens that didn't really tell anyone anything about what was going on with the machine, because the designers of the PLC program (outside contractors) were told that we didn't care about all of that data, we just needed the HMI to be within the 500/1000 tag limit. So I thought this company would be doing that too! What I got instead was an application that was built more for show than it was for functionality. I have a background of understanding that some companies enjoy making 'High Performance' HMIs and that sounded cool to me. You might be thinking to yourself: 'Oh this isn't so bad, it's not like he's making one from scratch.' Well lemme tell ya, these guys did not program these HMI applications with the next person in mind. One of these tasks was updating existing WonderWare applications they had. In my first job in the automation sector, I was but a lowly intern meant to handle all the work that the full-time Controls Engineer didn't want to do/didn't have time to do. So now that I've finished working for the company that was making me do this, I suppose I can speak on it a bit.
